About 2 years ago, a friend and I decided to ask the question.
Can you smoke yerba mate?

We’ve all heard of indians smoking peace pipes, some people smoke industrial strenghth sage (a common kitchen spice) for a wacky experience and of course illegally speaking marijuana is probably the most popular herb to smoke.
So after a long night of partying and beer drinking my friend Jon and I decided to see what the experience of smoking a rolled cigar of yerba mate would be like.
Now don’t lose your mind here…Mind you, this is not the most intelligent thing to try, but sometimes we don’t act very intelligently. But seriously how do you think people discovered the physiological effects of marijuana and other natural drugs such as mushrooms. They tried (smoked/ate) it. How else?
Anyways we rolled up “the blunt” and smoked a few puffs much the same as you would a Cuban Cigar. Now besides being somewhat inebriated already, there was a very mild relaxing feeling that swept the body. Really not much though.
So the verdict is yerba mate can be smoked whether or not it’s intelligent or beneficial I’m sure could be debated.
Would I recommend smoking yerba mate?
No. I think it’s much more beneficial to drink it, and besides my “1 night stand smoking yerba mate” it’s been over 4 years since I smoked anything. It’s goood to just get high off off life naturally, and that’s the way I plan to keep it.
But hey, it makes a nice story.

Just smoked half a joint of Yerba. Felt slight light feeling. Taste was not as harsh as I thought it might be. Reminded me of burning a cedar stick in a campfire. 15 mins later and now I’m making tea. Stick to air. Smoking is for chimneys.

fellas fellas…. im from Santa Fe, Argentina, and i smoke yerba de mate…. so i took a puff clouding up my brain, and i did it agian. AND IT FELT GOOD. but NOT as good as my mary loo that sticks to your hand like glue. And if i was you, in time of need, you should take a puff of this herb to relax your body until it makes you feel mejor. AND ITZ GOOD FOR THE SOUL!

We tried two mate maneuvers only moments ago:
1. We rolled a yerba mate cigar, using a brown paper bag.
2. We smoked yerba mate and whole cloves in a cheap pipe.
The brown-bag mate cigar was surprisingly mellow–it was a good experience. The mate and cloves in the pipe were very tasty, but I think we used too much clove, because all of our tongues were numb by the time we finished.
Give it a go, and be sure to finish your mate experience with a hot gourd of fresh-brewed mate. It will leave you relaxed and refreshed!

I took a few puffs of yerba mate and I thought it was great, Then I smoked it for 2 hours, whenever I needed a cigerette I lit up some mate, or was it that I needed mate? Better than cigerettes, or at least a good break from them. It makes ya feel good, gives mental clarity, and a buzz. Intensifies marijuana buzz. I love it. I have like a pound of loose leaf yerbe mate sitting here, and I’m so happy I’ve discovered this! Lil Flowz was right.

I tried this about 4 hours ago and here’s my report. I smoked 4 small bowls worth and within 30 min I was feeling it. It gave me a calm, mellow feeling that lasted about 2 hours. It was actually fairly pleasant. However, after those 2 hours I started getting a little irritable. Since then I have become very stressed and much more irritable (I almost threw my phone because I couldn’t immediately find a specific symbol on the keyboard). I’m typically very chill, so this is very unusual. This may not happen to everybody, but I wanted people to know the possibility existed. Happy smoking!

I think I will stick to weed when it comes to smoking…but I LOVE drinking yerba mate! It’s really good stuff!

i thot of stretching my marijuana by adding some ground yerba mate to my pipe; my pipe (made it myself) holds several grams of pot but i only have enuf pot to light it.i have been using mate by adding it to my tea since i lived in uruguay back in the 60′s. it looks like ground alfalfa when it comes out of my teapot(i dont strain it)and makes me feel great! i also add a teaspoon of ground guarana to my mix.

After reading all these comments I decided to try it with my glass pipe, I packed it full as it could get light it up and it felt like straight flames went into my lungs, it burned by the minute I sucked the whole thing lit up, I wouldn’t suggest smoking this at all it leaves a terrible taste in your mouths and makes you cough your balls off.
